Official taxis in Costa Rica are red with a yellow badge visible on top of the car, generally they also have a yellow triangle drawn on the door.
Each time you use a taxi in Costa Rica, make sure the driver uses the meter (in Costa Rica we call the rate meter: Maria). It is recommended that you only use cabs if they have the Maria, if you don´t, you might find yourself dealing with someone trying to over charge you.If you plan to use a taxi to go to the beach, you can always “negotiate” the cost in advance, in this case, the Maria will not be necessary.
In Costa Rica there are many “pirate taxis”. It is not advisable to use them because they are unregulated and often uninsured. Pirate Taxi Drivers often drive red cars to confuse people so, always look for the yellow emblem on the roof of the car to be sure certain it is an official one. Also the Maria will be an excellent indicator. Unofficial taxis will not have one of course.
Airport taxis are orange, you can use those with confidence as well.
