Entry Essentials (2026 Updates)
-
Passport: Must be valid for the duration of your stay.
-
Proof of Exit: You must have a return or onward ticket (digital copy is fine).
-
Stay Duration: Most tourists (USA/EU) are granted up to 180 days upon entry.
-
Yellow Fever: Only required if traveling from specific countries in South America or Africa.
I am traveling from the USA
-
Money: Your USD is accepted almost everywhere. No need to exchange at the airport.
-
Power: No adapter needed. We use the same 110V Type A/B plugs.
-
Comms: Most US “Travel Passes” work here perfectly.
-
Tipping: 10% is already in the bill. An extra $1–$5 for great service is standard.
I am traveling from Europe
-
Currency: Don’t bring Euros. Exchange them for Colones at a bank or just use your card, as Euros are not accepted in shops. Alternatively, you can bring US Dollars; these are widely accepted in the vast majority of local businesses. Furthermore, your card will be accepted at nearly every place you go, so you can rely on it for most transactions. Cash is mainly useful for very small purchases or tips.
- Banking: You can walk into any bank and they will help you with currency exchange; just make sure to bring your passport. If you exchange money anywhere else, check the official exchange rate beforehand. This ensures you don’t get ripped off or stuck with a terrible rate.
-
Electricity: You’ll need an adapter. We use 110V and flat-prong plugs (Type A/B). Make sure your chargers are compatible with 110V.
-
Language: “Pura Vida” is our go-to phrase for “Hello,” “Goodbye,” and “It’s all good.”
-
Stay: Since it’s a long-haul trip (11+ hours), make sure you have international medical insurance.
Requisitos de entrada (Actualización 2026)
-

- Moneda: No traigas euros.
- Electricidad: Necesitas adaptador. Aquí usamos 110V y clavijas planas (Tipo A/B).
Update: The 2026 Transport Benchmark Table
Navigating your exit from Juan Santamaría International (SJO) is the first “test” of your trip. While Costa Rica is safe, price transparency in transport varies wildly.
To ensure you aren’t paying a “tourist premium,” we’ve compiled the verified 2026 benchmarks for the most common routes. Whether you choose the regulated security of an Official Airport Taxi or the door-to-door comfort of a Private Shuttle, use the data below to calibrate your budget and expectations.
| From Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO) to... | Official Airport Taxi (Orange) | Private Shuttle (Van) | Shared Shuttle (per person) | Est. Drive Time |

Uber in Costa Rica: Important Notes
Uber operates in a legal gray area. While not fully authorized, it is widely used and subject to a 13% VAT.
- Airport pickup: Not allowed at arrivals. Walk a few minutes outside the terminal to meet your driver.
- Connectivity: Mobile data is recommended, as airport WiFi may not work reliably with the app.
- Cost: Usually more affordable than official red taxis.
Uber is commonly used by locals and residents, but these limitations are important to understand to avoid confusion.
