Access to be Beach

We would like to be clear about one thing: roads in Costa Rica are tough but doable in most cases. Do not expect USA or Europe Highways.  Most roads have only 2 lanes and are unmarked, which makes it tough to drive at night and when it´s raining. That being said, many people tourists drive and are fine with it.

1 = No Roads     2 = Very Tough     3 = Doable-Use caution     4 = Not Bad     5 = Easy

Grade = 4

Notes on Puerto Viejo:

Puerto Viejo is located in the beautiful Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Limón.

Puerto Viejo is a charming little Afro-Caribbean Village, full of restaurants, bars, stands and “pulperías” (pulperías are mini-groceries stores where you can get basic stuff like: toilet paper, candy, sodas, canned goods, cereal, milk, bread, etc. Pulperías are a popular concept all around Costa Rica) and, you will not run out of places to stay: hostels, hotels and vacation rental houses, which are a great option for families or groups of friends.

Reggae music, Caribbean food, surfers and a wonderful variety of visitors from all over the globe (some of which came to Puerto Viejo and never left!) chill-out around town at all times of the day.  With stunning wild life and beautiful beach after beach, you will keep your day busy.

A little research about the weather is advisable; the area is as green and lush as it is because it rains at lot! So it is best you check the rainiest months. (Check out: Costa Rica Weather).

The stretch from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo is about 8 miles, reason for which you´ll find many people riding a bike. The beaches along that stretch are: Puerto Viejo, Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, and Manzanillo, all within the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge.
